Benleigh Alpaca Stud has the distinction of having bred the world’s first commercial embryo transfer (ET) alpacas which were born in 2002.
Females who do are not of the high class that Benleigh requires, but are excellent breeders and mothers are utilised as recipients and embryos are implanted in them.
Benleigh Flame IAR: 36468, by Purrumbete Brigantine out of Purrumbete Flamingo, has become a significant female in the breeding program at Benleigh.
![]() Flamenco, Flambella and Flambellini are examples of the quality Flame produces and all were purchased within days of being made available for sale. Benleigh Cavellier ET, also out of Flame, was Junior Champion Male at the Victorian Alpaca Fest and the Royal Melbourne Show and has now been purchased by EP Cambridge. Quailty is not a coincidence and at Benleigh on going effort has been paramount in selection of breeding stock. Since the first alpacas were purchased in 1989 records of all aspects of management have been recorded. The AGE program which is being widely advised to breeders, is in step with all that Benleigh has done for so many years. Quality, quantity, and fineness of fleece with lack of medulation, plus correct conformation, with emphasis on bone structure and straight legs has always been the goal and criteria for selection.
![]() In 2003, Benleigh held the largest private auction of alpacas yet held in Australia, with record prices and purchasers clamoring for the Benleigh bloodlines. With a reduced number of alpacas, an elite herd was created, which is Benleigh today. |
